8.9-inch and 10.1-inch Kindle Fire expected in Q2 2012

As well as appointing Foxconn to manufacture its 7-inch Kindle Fire, it seems Amazon is planning an 8.9-inch and a 10.1-inch tablet computer that will debut in the second quarter next year.

Asian tech site DigiTimes reports that Amazon is developing 8.9 and 10.1-inch models that will compete with rival products from LG and Samsung.

Production will begin in the second quarter of 2012.

According to IHS iSuppli, Amazon’s 7-inch Kindle Fire cost US$201.70 to make, suggesting Amazon is making the devices at a loss.

However, Amazon sees the route to greater revenues through the sale of digital content like apps, music, games and e-books.
