Apple's iPhone 5 smartphone

Apple’s iPhone 5 smartphone has topped two of Yahoo’s top searches of the year lists, as the most top-searched obsession and most top-searched gadget of 2012, and is No 2 on its top searches overall list.

The US presidential election is just ahead of the iPhone 5 in the No 1 spot on the Top Searches Overall on Yahoo! in 2012 list.

The iPhone 5’s popularity as a search term can be attributed to its release in September this year.

Apple products overall dominate Yahoo!’s top-searched gadget of 2012 list. The iPad mini tablet computer, which Apple also released this year, comes in at No 3 on the list, preceded by the iPad 3 at No 2. The iPhone 4 sits in the No 6 spot and the iPod touch at No 8.

The US presidential elections have had quite a presence in technology, as well, what with the candidates, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, having employed social media in their campaigns.

Yahoo!’s Year in Review 2012 reflects the daily search habits of users and offers a glimpse into the social trends, newsmakers, top stories, and viral fads of 2012 based on what millions of people searched for, the company said.
