The US Transport Security Administration (TSA) is rolling out its latest security requirement, whereby travellers to the US from a number of countries must have their electronic devices turned on while going through security checkpoints.
“As the travelling public knows, all electronic devices are screened by security officers. During the security examination, officers may also ask that owners power up some devices, including cellphones. Powerless devices will not be permitted on board the aircraft. The traveller may also undergo additional screening,” the TSA said on its website.
The list of countries from which travellers will be susceptible to these checks has yet to be announced.
The need for these checks stem from the perceived threat of electronic devices containing explosive material.
The major worry is that with the current generation of smartphones regularly living a life just on the edge of power due to high battery usage, travellers with a dead phone may have to consider either leaving it behind or not getting their flight.
The TSA, which in the past introduced full-body scanners in some airports, added that it will continue to roll out further security measures, if necessary.
“TSA will continue to adjust security measures to ensure that travellers are guaranteed the highest levels of aviation security conducted as conveniently as possible.”
