The Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone

Samsung will in the coming weeks – possibly in time for IFA 2014 – unveil a new high-end smartphone called the Galaxy Alpha that it aims to have in the marketplace ahead of the Apple iPhone 6.

Apple is believed to be working on two high-end smartphone devices with 1,704 x 960 resolution.

The Californian tech giant is believed to be finally breaking away from the 4-inch screen that has dominated the last few generations of iPhone and will this October debut a 4.7-inch device and a 5.5-inch device of phablet proportions.

Always keen to try and get in there ahead of Apple, South Korea-headquartered Samsung is working on its own device called the Alpha, that will be a mix between the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Note phablet computer/phone.

The next phony war

The Galaxy Alpha, which was previously rumoured under such titles as the Galaxy S Prime or Galaxy F will, according to Korean publication ETNews, come with a metal chassis and a number of additional high-end features.

While ETNews has tipped August as the possible launch period it is even more likely Samsung will hold its fire until the massive IFA 2014 consumer electronics show takes place in Germany.

As well as a new generation of tablet devices and Galaxy Gear smart watches, Samsung is also set to unveil its low-cost Gear VR headset, which will run on Facebook’s Oculus VR technology.
