Just as Apple releases iOS 8.1.2 with fixes for various bugs, including ringtone issues, a dashboard reveals iOS 8 is now running on two-thirds of all iOS devices, including iPhones, iPods and iPads.

According to Apple’s App Store Distribution dashboard, 63pc of devices are running iOS 8, while 33pc are running iOS 7 and 4pc are using earlier operating systems.

That is quite an achievement when you consider iOS 8 was only introduced 82 days ago.

iOS 8 works on iPhone devices from iPhone 4s to iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, fifth-generation iPod touch devices, and devices from the iPad 2 to the current slew of iPad devices, like the new iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3.

When Apple unveiled the new iPad devices in October, software engineering vice-president Craig Fegherini said that at that stage, four weeks after iOS 8 was launched, some 48pc of users were running iOS 8, compared with Android KitKat, which had only 25pc uptake by users in one year.

New iOS 8.1.2 fixes bugs

Apple last night released iOS 8.1.2, which fixes a number of bugs, including a bug that could have caused users to lose ringtones purchased from iTunes.

To download the software on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, just go to Settings > General > Software Update and download it over the air.

The update includes a new web-based tool that restores purchased ringtones if the device is updated to the latest iOS 8.1.2 operating system.
