Skype Translator adds French and German to preview

18 Jun 2015

Skype has added two more major languages to its spoken tranlastion tool Skype Translator Preview, with French and German added to the already included English, Italian, Spanish and Mandarin.

This represents over a quarter of the world’s native speakers, with 50 different written languages serviced too.

“Many of our early adopters have described their experience using Skype Translator as magical,” explains Yasmin Khan, “the first time you see someone’s face who hears a translated conversation, they just light-up.”

Although that sounds a bit much, adding more languages to a tool that is only going to get better with time is pretty cool.

To try it out, just download the Skype Translator preview app from the Windows Store. Until a rollout later this summer it is still a pre-release feature, and is only available for PCs and tablets running Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 preview.

Indeed Skype is so happy with its tool that it has a few stories to support its confidence, like researcher Ted Hart helping the company modify Skype Translator so it allows deaf people to experience a Skype call for the first time.
