Cheap PC sticks welcome Lenovo to the club

24 Jun 2015

The cheap PC stick market just got a new entry, and this time it’s the company that is selling more PCs than anyone else in the world – Lenovo.

Called the slightly clunky Ideacentre Stick 300, the Chinese company’s offering makes sense given it already dominates the PC market during a time when many companies are moving away from desktop and laptop computers, but it now wants to get even more mobile.

According to CNet, the stick will be little bigger than a standard USB stick, measuring just under 10cm in width and just under 4cm in depth, and will run on any monitor with a HDMI connection.

In terms of its hardware, it offers enough to be able to offer a little bit more than the basics, with 2GB of RAM and 32GM of storage, all running off Windows 8.1, but with the option to upgrade to Windows 10 when it launches next month.

In terms of connectivity, it allows you to connect to Bluetooth wirelessly but also includes a micro-USB slot, an additional HDMI port and SD card reader.

It even comes with a rather small speaker built into its casing and Lenovo are throwing in a Microsoft Office subscription for three months as well.

Most importantly, Lenovo expects to retail the Ideacentre Stick 300 next month also, with prices starting at US$129 (€113).

“We’ve looked at the computing needs of travellers, business people and families, and realised that a truly portable and affordable solution would be a significant benefit to users of all kinds,” said Jun Ouyang, vice president and general manager, Worldwide Desktop and Visuals, Lenovo. “Our goal with the Ideacentre Stick 300 is to give those users a sense of freedom and enhanced mobility while packing a serious punch in a small device.”
