Windows 10 updates will be mandatory

17 Jul 2015

Microsoft will not be letting Windows 10 users choose whether or not they want to install updates to the operating system and will instead make the upgrades automatically as they become available.

As discovered by The Register, Windows 10’s licensing agreement states that the software “periodically checks for system and app updates, and downloads and installs them for you.

“By accepting this agreement,” it continues, “you agree to receive these types of automatic updates without any additional notice.”

The consumer tech giant’s decision should stop users from inevitably selecting ‘remind me in 24 hours’ when prompted to update their system, though it might have some knock-on consequences. Upgrades can sometimes cause applications or drivers for peripherals, like printers and scanners, to fail.

Windows 10 will be made available on 29 July. However, not all 1bn eligible devices will get it on day one, but instead it will arrive in phases.
