Ford is integrating Apple and Google's respective smartphone interfaces into all cars by 2020

At CES 2016, Ford has revealed that it plans to boost Sync 3 in millions of cars to enable compatibility with Apple’s CarPlay with Siri voice control and Google’s Android Auto, as well as 4G LTE connectivity.

Starting this year, owners of Sync 3-equipped vehicles will be able to choose between two interfaces: iPhone users will be able to activate Apple CarPlay while Android users will be able to activate Android Auto.

Currently, there are more than 15m Sync-equipped vehicles in the world, with more than 43m more expected by 2020.

As well as compatibility with iOS and Android smartphones, Ford is adding 4G LTE to Sync Connect to enable car owners to actively access features of their car, including programming a remote start, unlocking doors, checking fuel levels or locating a parked vehicle.

Ford has been pulling out all the stops in recent years, trying to envision the future of transport and urban living, and it sees connectivity as a vital pillar supporting its strategy.

“SYNC allows customers to bring the smartphone technology they’re comfortable with into a vehicle and use it without hassle,” said Don Butler, Ford executive director, Connected Vehicle and Services.

“With SYNC, we move at our customers’ pace – making it easy for them to maintain a connected lifestyle no matter their choice of smartphone, apps or services inside and outside their vehicle.”

In North America, Ford will be making Apple CarPlay and Android Auto available in all 2017 vehicles equipped with Sync 3, starting with the new Ford Escape.

Owners of 2016 vehicles equipped with Sync 3 will be able to upgrade later this year.
