Etsy, home to all kinds of random products, has produced a gem of an idea: customised 3D-printed Lego heads. Well, we think it is a gem of an idea.
I have a theory that it is price and price alone that saw smart devices dominate global populaces, with the excellent marketing of a vacuous ‘value’ term firming up products that, in many cases, were needless.
You see, had Lego been more affordable in my youth and teenage years, I most likely would have spent my time building airports, bridges and hotels.
I’d have a multi-story carpark attached to the hospital I spent hours building. I might have even brought terror to my brickwork with the introduction of rival dinosaur toys. It was the price, though; I just couldn’t justify it.
That and it’s exceptionally hard to purchase the kind of Lego I want, namely a big bucket full of random pieces. It’s all themed, too themed.
I was wrong, all hail smart technology
And now, instead of Lego cities, it’s Sim City or the Sims. Instead of Lego toy cars, it’s BB8, controlled from your smartphone.
So maybe, just maybe, there’s room for a world of personalised Lego men and women. Your mug on a Lego body featuring a nice dinner suit, a tennis get-up or some army fatigues.
If so, Etsy seller funky3Dfaces will make a killing. Although Lego purists should look away because funky3Dfaces pours scorn on tradition.
There are no head-top holes on these customised noggins, rather a predesigned hairdo. That means in time of war you can’t put on a helmet, or at the fire station you can’t adorn yourself with a bright red had.
“Although we do enjoy making bones and buildings we wanted to use the technology we had to make something fun and affordable to the masses,” said the company.
Is this what the masses want? Maybe, but would you be willing to spend $75 on a pair of Lego characters that appear to be David Beckham and Angelina Jolie?
