The Google Doodle that marks the first day of summer 2013

Internet search giant Google is making waves on its homepage with an animated Google Doodle celebrating the summer solstice, also known as the first day of summer, today.

The doodle – a stylised Google logo – features drawings of five swimmers by Christoph Niemann. The animated portion of the doodle consists of a wave that coasts past the swimmers, bobbing them up in the water.

The swimmers, all sporting bathing caps in Google blue, red and yellow, vaguely take the form of the letters in the word ‘Google’.

The summer solstice marks the height of summer (also referred to as midsummer) and takes place when the sun is at its highest point in the sky, resulting in the ‘longest day of the year’.  In other words, it’s the day where there is the most daylight.

After today, the amount of daylight will begin to lessen until the winter solstice on 21 December.
