From today, Facebook will begin merging users’ email addresses with the address they use to send people to their Timeline. The move could be seen as a fightback against Google+ which has used Gmail as a lynchpin to reach 170m users.
According to Facebook, the updated addresses will be rolled out over the next few weeks.
Users who have already selected an email address will not be affected.
The move could be seen as a fightback by Facebook – which is approaching 1bn users globally – against the sudden and furious rise of Google’s social network Google+.
In announcing Google’s financial results yesterday, CEO Larry Page said Google+ is the social spine that now connects all of Google’s products.
A key factor in the growth to 170m users in just several months is the integration of Google+ with Gmail and the ability to merge contacts with Circles on Google+.
