The iPhone 4S’ pre-orders have hit 1m within 24 hours, which is the most for any Apple product, according to Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice-president of worldwide product marketing.

The iPhone 4 held the previous record, clocking up 600,000 pre-orders in one day.

“We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S,” said Schiller.

“The first-day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do.”

Pre-orders for the iPhone 4S began in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK for its 14 October release date in these regions. The iPhone 4S will arrive in 22 other countries, including Ireland, by the end of October.

The record was hit in spite of disappointment felt by some who believe the iPhone 4S isn’t a major change from the iPhone 4.

While the iPhone 4S looks almost identical to the iPhone 4, numerous upgrades were made on the inside. Some of its new features include an A5 processor, an 8-megapixel camera and voice recognition system Siri. It will also have iOS 5 built-in, along with Apple’s new cloud locker, iCloud.
