Apple has quietly designed and unveiled a microfibre Smart Battery Case for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s that could extend the smartphones’ battery life by as much as 25 hours.
“We’ve changed everything about these new iPhones,” Apple CEO Tim Cook gushed in September when the iPhone 6s was unveiled for the first time.
I can’t attest to that, but for anyone who has struggled with the battery on an older iPhone the hope would be that he meant the battery too.
Either way, batteries die, and until now Apple has relied on third-party manufacturers to produce a panoply of battery cases.
But now, Apple has quietly begun selling its own Smart Battery Case for the iPhone 6 and 6s.
Smooth and powerful
The silicone case costs $99. It extends the iPhone’s battery life to 18 hours of internet usage on LTE networks, up to 20 hours of video playback and up to 25 hours of increased talk time.
The case comes in white and charcoal colours with a microfibre lining on the inside and outside.
It is charged via a standard Lightning port and users can charge their iPhone and the battery case simultaneously.
Appearance-wise it does little to harm the integrity of the look of the iPhone except for a slight bump at the back to accommodate the extra battery.
Apple hasn’t said if it plans to bring out Smart Battery Case devices for older iPhones.
