Otterbox to launch protective smartphone cases in Ireland

26 Nov 2010

Otterbox will release a range of tough smartphone cases for Irish customers this Christmas, which will be sold in Compu B, Vodafone and O2.

Otterbox recently announced the creation of 50 new jobs in Cork over the next two years, setting up new headquarters in George’s Quay for the Europe, Middle East and Africa markets.

The covers come in three different ranges – the Commuter series, the Defender series and the Impact series.

The Commuter series is a slim case, made of a durable silicone mid-layer and a one-piece, custom-moulded polycarbonate shell.

There’s also added protection for scratches on screens along with protection against bumps and shocks.

The Defender series is a much more rugged form of protection. It’s made of a clear, protective membrane, with a high-impact polycarbonate shell and silicone.

Along with protecting against scratches, bumps and shocks, it also prevents dust and drops.

What the cases are made of

The Impact series is made of compression-moulded silicone with inner coring that absorbs impact. It shields the phone from lint and has texturing for extra grip. It protects against bumps and “dings.”

We got to take a look at the Commuter cover for the HTC Desire. It’s a pretty slimline case, though the material feels sturdy enough to keep your phone protected. All the ports aligned well with the case’s design.

That said, I’d recommend going onto the website when putting it on. The instructions given are pretty small and hard to read, which isn’t great, particularly when there’s a specific order in putting on the screen protector.

The black case was pretty sleek and professional looking, though there are other colours available if you’re into a more funky design.

The Otterbox covers will be available in the next few weeks in Compu B, Vodafone and O2 for numerous smartphone devices.
