With 50m iPhones replaced worldwide in the past year, what can be done with these disused devices? US-based software company People Power has a solution that can repurpose an old iPhone as a wireless video camera.

The Presence app is free to download from the iTunes App Store and, since its European launch earlier this month, has seen encouraging take-up in Sweden, France, Spain, Denmark, the UK, Germany and the Netherlands.

Once downloaded to a spare iPhone, iPad or iPod, Presence transforms these devices into real-time Wi-Fi video cameras, for use as security cameras or monitoring devices.

The app can also be downloaded to iOS devices in use and this will enable alerts to be sent to users once motion is detected by the Presence camera. A range of camera devices can be connected to one active device and users can even conduct two-way video conversations using the app.
