BlackBerry manufacturer RIM is expected to show the world a new touchscreen smartphone at a press event later today and even more interesting is it is rumoured to be revealing a new tablet device (lamely dubbed the ‘Blackpad’ by the web) that would compete with the iPad.

The new touchscreen phone is thought to be the Blackberry 9800, a 1GHz smartphone will slide-out QWERTY keyboard a 5-megapixel camera and 512MB of RAM, according to PCWorld.

Chinese website BerryTimes.cn has several convincing images of the device from the front, back and side. With its curved edges and slide-out keyboard, it resembled a bigger Palm Pre Pro.

With the joint announcement of details on the new BlackBerry OS 6, it is possible that the mobile operating system could be specced for a tablet-computing device, also.
