2 Jan 2003

Sun Microsystems and Siemens have joined forces to launch the Java Masters Competition, a global competition to give students the opportunity to develop new Java applications for Siemens mobile phones.

The goal is to develop new mobile Java applications (J2ME) for the Siemens S55, C55 and M50 mobile phone models. Professional developer tools will be made available by Siemens and Sun. First prize is an all expenses paid trip to the Java One 2003 conference in San Francisco as well as the latest Siemens Smartphone model. The second prize is a Sun Blade 150 plus a Smartphone and the third prize is a Smartphone. Students who submit a convincing business plan in addition to the application will also have the opportunity to opt for the Business Award consisting of professional business coaching by a Siemens Mobile Acceleration Investment director.

The Java Masters Competition is open to all registered students worldwide, regardless of the subjects they are studying. Teamwork is encouraged, so group submissions are acceptable. To take part in the competition, students must register online at www.javamasters.org. The jury will consist of Siemens mobile and Sun technical and marketing experts who will evaluate the applications in accordance with various criteria. For example, not only the quality of the application counts but also its user friendliness and marketability.

The final date for application submission is 15 March. Siemens and Sun are talking to colleges and universities nationwide to encourage participation by Irish students in the competition.
