Thinner, lighter full-sized iPad to be launched in coming months

In addition to revealing its next iPhone device on 10 September, Apple is understood to be planning to launch in the next three months a full-sized iPad device that is as thin and light as the current iPad mini. The company is also planning an iPad mini with a powerful Retina display.

Bloomberg reported Apple’s plans for a refresh of its iPad and iPhone product range, while John Gurman’s 9to5Mac referred to sources who said the new iPad models are expected to be launched in the last three months of this year.

At present, all eyes are on Apple for a press event tipped to take place 10 September in which it will reveal its next smartphone, dubbed in some quarters the iPhone 5S (plus gold model).

There is also speculation that Apple will begin to effectively target the mid-range smartphone market with a lower-cost polycarbonate smartphone expected to be called the iPhone 5C.

As well as anticipated upgrades to the camera and microprocessor, the high-end iPhone 5S is expected to come with a new fingerprint sensor.

The new devices will be loaded with the next generation of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 7, which will come with better organisational capabilities, better social media capabilities and better opportunities for app developers.

Apple is also getting ready to launch its next Mac operating system, Mavericks, in the coming weeks.
