Toshiba SmartPad surfaces before launch

24 Aug 2010

It looks as though autumn 2010 will be the season of the tablet and the latest device to have leaked images on the web before official launch is the Toshiba SmartPad.

The SmartPad from Toshiba has not been officially confirmed but website Notebookitalia has several images of this Android-based tablet.

The tech website goes on to detail that the SmartPad has a built-in webcam for videoconferencing plus HDMI and USB ports and four touch buttons at the base of the screen for navigation.

It is rumoured that the tablet will run on Android 3.0 or ‘Gingerbread’, an as-yet-unreleased version of Google’s mobile operating system.

Meanwhile, Toshiba already has a touchscreen device that it calls an “ultra mobile PC” – the Libretto W100. This device is dual touchscreen and text input is by virtual keyboard but it also has a soft trackpad for clicking and browsing. The Libretto is designed for web browsing but also for use as an e-book reader. It runs on Windows 7 and has a built-in webcam.
