UCD and UC Davis to share staff and expertise

25 Sep 2014

University College Dublin (UCD) and the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) have signed an agreement of co-operation to share research for the benefit of both scientific communities.

Prof Orla Feely, vice-president for Research, Innovation and Impact at UCD, and Dr Paul Dodd, associate vice-chancellor for Interdisciplinary Research and Strategic Initiatives at UC Davis, signed the agreement on 24 September at the Irish Embassy in Washington, DC.

Under the deal, both universities will have a particular focus on developing the science and technology of food, health and agriculture – areas in which both universities have a significant investment.

The direct result of this agreement will see an exchange between the two universities of staff and students, as well as ideas.

Speaking of the implications of such a deal, Prof Andrew J Deeks, president of UCD, said, “Researchers and academics at our institutions have been sharing ideas and working together for some time, but this agreement shows a real commitment on both sides to collaborate even further towards common goals.

“It heralds a new stage of co-operation between our two universities; a stage which promises to be exciting and exhilarating for all.”

There will also be an annual symposium held in either Dublin or California, organised by the UCD Institute of Food and Health and the UC Davis Foods for Health Institute to strengthen and broaden strategic links between both institutions in the areas of food and health.
