Robotic arms, 3D printing and laser cutting were used to weave a dress live during a fashion show in Paris earlier this week.

During Dutch fashion designer Iris Van Herpen’s spring/summer 2016 show at Paris Fashion Week, Game of Thrones actress Gwendoline Christie (who plays Brienne of Tarth in the show) lay on an elevated plinth on the catwalk surrounded by three robotic arms that weaved the garment onto her.

The robotic arms created a circular dress – or quaquaversal — on Christie, with the garment also lending its name to Van Herpen’s spring/summer 2016 collection, Deezen reported.

The programmed robotic arms combined 3D printing, laser cutting and hand weaving to interlace “an architectural mesh which rays out around her”, according to Van Herpen’s website.

The dramatic-looking robotic arms were created by artist Jolan van der Wiel.

Van Herpen has used interesting innovations in fashion before, presenting a collection that featured 3D-printed shoes in 2013.

High-tech fashion also made an appearance at New York Fashion Week earlier this year when clothing brand Chromat used Intel Curie to power a ‘smart’ dress and sports bra.
