Airtricity enters domestic gas market; creates 200 jobs

18 May 2010

Energy company Airtricity has announced it is to create 200 new jobs over the next year as it enters the domestic gas market.

Some 100 jobs will be created at the company’s headquarters in Sandyford, Co Dublin, while the remaining 100 jobs will be outsourced positions.

The new positions include those in sales, customer support, billing and support services.

Aitricity also today set a match to a potential gas war by saying that it would be offering customers a 10pc discount on Bord Gáis’ rates.

The company claimed this 10pc discount, along with its existing electricity offering, could save customers up to €210 a year.

Welcoming Airtricity’s entry into the domestic gas market and the creation of 200 new jobs, Energy Minister Eamon Ryan TD said: “Our policy of competition in the domestic energy market is reaping dividends for the consumer and wider economy. Airtricity is an innovative company and I wish it well in this venture.”

“Today’s announcement of Airtricity’s entry into the domestic gas market reinforces the success that the company has achieved to date in becoming Ireland’s largest independent energy utility. This major investment by Airtricity, including the creation of 200 new jobs between now and April 2011, will continue to fuel Airtricity’s growth and its ambitions to provide real and sustainable competition in the energy-supply market,” said Airtricity managing director Kevin Greenhorn.

Airtricity, which is owned by Scottish and Southern Energy, entered the electricity market last year. It says it is currently serving 200,000 customers, with the expectation that this will now increase to around half a million by 2013.
