The recent news that a Leeds man has made money from telemarketing calls made to him have inspired this week’s career memes.
Lee Beaumont had grown tired of calls in which the caller tried to sell him insurance and solar panels, so he converted his landline into a premium hotline through Phone Pay Plus. He has been giving his new premium phone number to banks, public utility companies and any marketer that asks for his contact details, Gawker.com reported.
Since installing the new line in November 2011, telemarketers who ring him up now have to cough up US$0.16 (Beaumont gets to keep US$0.11). To date, he has made around US$465 from calls to his premium number, Gawker.com reported.
Phone Pay Plus, however, discourages consumers from adopting ideas like Lee’s, as there could be legal repercussions.
Telemarketers themselves can expect to earn a salary of €22,000-€35,000 in Ireland, according to PayScale.com.
