Today we continue our countdown of Ireland’s top jobs announcement stories of 2012. It was the year companies in sectors that are thriving despite the downturn – technology, science and pharma – created jobs in their organisations, ranging from multinationals to start-ups.
Agri-food and food innovation company Kerry Group, for example, announced 900 jobs, betting giant Paddy Power proclaimed 800 new jobs, and financial services giant Northern Trust revealed it would be hiring to fill 400 positions.

35 – Apple creating 500 new jobs in CorkApple has confirmed it will expand its European base in Cork, creating 500 jobs over 18 months in the process. RTÉ News reported that Apple will build a three-storey office block beside its current base in Cork City in order to expand its business in Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa. |

34 – Foreign language proficiency and sales skills required to fill 2,200 future jobsIreland’s Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation has launched a skills report from Forfás and the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs (EGFSN) that highlights a critical need to improve sales skills and foreign languages to meet employers’ needs in exporting companies. In preparing the report, Forfás consulted with more than 60 companies, both foreign affiliates and indigenous. These companies anticipated a 15–20pc increase in employment over the next three years, however, recruitment difficulties are expected when it comes to finding international sales staff who are proficient in another language, as well as software engineers. |

33 – Medical device company Cambus Teo to create 35 Galway jobsMedical device firm Cambus Teo is to create 35 new jobs, now that half of the Spiddal, Co Galway, company has been acquired by Helix Medical, a global manufacturer for the medical device and healthcare industries. Under the agreement, Helix Medical will provide Cambus Teo with expansion financing. |

32 – Tech job announcements this year reach 4,000On the back of an encouraging four job announcements one morning in May, ICT Ireland said tech job announcements for 2012 already equalled the total for 2011. We saw announcements for 40 jobs in Dublin from BuyersClub.ie, 20 jobs in Carlow from MSD, 50 jobs in Limerick from Action Point Technology, and, most significantly, 100 jobs in Dublin from Amazon. With 210 positions just that morning made available for software developers, engineers and other specialists in the field of technology, it may have come as no surprise that tech job announcements in May 2012 already matched the total from 2011. |

31 – AOL to recruit 35 new software engineers for its European development engine in DublinAOL announced the hiring of 35 new software engineers at its Dublin operation. Dublin is the development engine for AOL across Europe and is working on critical technologies in Hadoop and big data. The move comes as AOL expands its reach as a provider of digital content, advertising solutions and services through brands like The Huffington Post, TechCrunch, Engadget, Mapquest, ADTECH and Advertising.com. |
