Technology retail chain Dixons Carphone is to create 220 seasonal jobs ahead of the busy Christmas sales season, the company revealed this morning.

Recruitment has begun and the company hopes to have all positions filled within the next month.

Under the Dixons Carphone Group, there are 98 Carphone Warehouse stores and 27 Currys PC World stores across the country.

Christmas shopping has begun early in Ireland

According to recent figures from Retail Excellence Ireland, the third quarter of this year was the best quarterly performance since 2007 for the retail sector. Sales were up 5.5pc on the same period last year with sales topping €3.3bn across 4,000 stores in Ireland.

“Christmas, both pre and post, is the busiest time of the year, and we’re pleased to report that Christmas shopping has already started here in Ireland,” explained Mark Slater, managing director of Dixons Carphone.

“Our seasonal staff each year are key to managing this busy period and delivering for our customers.

“In particular this year, we’re looking for tech-savvy candidates as our technology products, including phones and tablets, remain a top seller so people with tech knowledge and experience will be required to advise our customers,” Slater said.

Slater said that the earlier start to Christmas shopping is telling.

“The retail sector is bouncing back with strong consumer demand which will intensify over the next few months.

“The new seasonal roles are also an opportunity for people looking for permanent positions as many of our part-time team have gone on to secure full-time positions within the Group,” Slater said.
