Fleetmatics: a place to exercise your innovation

Fleetmatics straddles a strange divide. Ask any number of people if they’ve heard of the fleet management software company, and the answer will almost invariably be no. And, yet, they’re one of the biggest homegrown tech employers in Ireland.

Fleetmatics was founded in Dublin in 2004 and has since grown to have more than 1,100 employees globally, 150 of whom are in the Dublin HQ and technical hub/R&D centre.

As part of Siliconrepublic.com’s Employers to Watch 2016 series, we spoke to John Molamphy – vice-president of engineering at Fleetmatics – about the company’s ethos and culture.

Ambitious, driven and highly-motivated people are in high demand at the fleet-tracking software company, and there is a constant push for innovation.

With 33,000 customers – 650,000 vehicles monitored and three billion plots recorded per month – it’s certainly a ‘work hard’ company but, as Molamphy says, they also play hard.

There is a start-up culture at the company and, therefore, a tight-knit staff, who interact regularly at social events inside and outside of the office.

When she was younger, she had a dream where she started and won a fight with a T-Rex, so she’s pretty sure she kicked butt at this, too. Passions include eating all the cake, watching more TV than is healthy, and sassy comebacks. Her favourite thing on the internet is, and will likely remain, Pun Dog.
