Lakeland Dairies has opened a new €36m milk powder plant on its dairy processing site in Cavan.

More than 80 new jobs are expected to be created in Bailieboro, Co Cavan, following the official opening of a new dairy facility for Lakeland Dairies.

This is the third major milk powder plant on the same site. It’s among the most advanced milk powder plants in the world, as well as one of the largest of its kind in Europe.

The new plant comes after five years of planning and €40m of investment, which was supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through Enterprise Ireland. The company already employs more than 800 people and the new jobs are expected by 2019.

This new drying plant will underpin Lakeland Dairies’ current and future export-led growth as a major provider of ingredients to the global food manufacturing sector.

Lakeland Dairies operates across 15 counties on a cross-border basis. It processes milk into a wide range of value-added dairy food service products and food ingredients. The co-operative has a portfolio of 240 different dairy products, which it exports to 80 countries worldwide.

The latest investment means that more than 1bn litres of milk will now be processed at the site annually. This will produce more than 160,000 tonnes of milk powder and 50,000 tonnes of butter every year.

The drugs PTC Therapeutics develops treat rare diseases, particularly Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The jobs announcement is timely, given that today (7 September) is World Duchenne Awareness Day.

PTC Therapeutics’ Dublin site is based in Grand Canal Plaza and is responsible for finance, quality assurance, legal and a host of other back-office roles. The new jobs are expected within a short period of time.
