Today we continue our countdown of Ireland’s top jobs announcement stories of 2012. It was the year companies in sectors that are thriving despite the downturn – technology, science and pharma – created jobs in their organisations, ranging from multinationals to start-ups.

Agri-food and food innovation company Kerry Group, for example, announced 900 jobs, betting giant Paddy Power proclaimed 800 new jobs, and financial services giant Northern Trust revealed it would be hiring to fill 400 positions.

To celebrate a year of jobs announcements, Siliconrepublic.com has dedicated the month of December to the top 50 most popular jobs announcements of 2012. The list contains a myriad of companies, large and small, creating opportunities across Ireland.

30ResMed to create 50 new RD&I jobs in Dublin as part of major medical device project

Some 50 new projects are to be created at ResMed’s research operations at University College Dublin in what will rank among the most comprehensive medical device development projects ever undertaken by a multinational company in Ireland.

ResMed Inc, a developer, manufacturer and marketer of medical products to combat sleep and respiratory disorders, is expanding its RD&I facility in Dublin over the next three years.

29Taoiseach announces 200 jobs for Galway from Merit Medical

Two hundred jobs will be created over the next five years at a €20m Merit Medical Systems facility in Galway, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, TD, had announced.

Merit Medical Systems opened its expanded facility at Parkmore Business Park East in Galway in May. The €20m facility is to result in 200 jobs in R&D, shared services, operations support and manufacturing, with at least 30pc of these going to third-level graduates.

Some 800 jobs in areas such as e-commerce, m-commerce, technology development, social media, quantitative research, risk management and online marketing are to be created in Dublin by betting giant Paddy Power as it pushes ahead with its global expansion.

The new jobs will be created at the company’s new headquarters at Power Tower in Clonskeagh, which had been opened by Taoiseach Enda Kenny, TD.

27Pharmaceutical company Aspen to create 44 jobs in Dublin

Aspen is to create 44 jobs in Citywest, Dublin, as the generic pharmaceutical company is establishing a global regulatory, pharmacovigilance, quality assurance and supply projects centre of excellence.

The new jobs will bring Aspen’s total workforce in Ireland to 58.

Ireland’s Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton, TD, who announced the new jobs, said pharmaceuticals are a major sector of strength for Ireland, with nine out of the top 10 global companies located in the country.

26Amgen to create up to 100 jobs in US$200m expansion

Biotechnology firm Amgen is investing US$200m in an expansion programme in Ireland which will create up to 100 jobs. Some 350 construction jobs will also be created during the 19-month building period.

The expansion includes the construction of an 11,700 sq-metre building extension, a new production plant, an expanded warehouse and the major refurbishment of its existing buildings.
