20 new jobs for Galway at medical device maker Veryan Medical

2 Apr 2021

The company, which is owned by Otsuka Medical Devices, is seeking new team members to support three medical device development projects.

Medical device company Veryan Medical has announced an expansion of its R&D operation in Galway, creating 20 new jobs at the facility.

While the exact figure was not announced, Veryan is said to be making a multimillion-euro investment in this expansion, which is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland.

The 20 jobs created will be associated with three development projects at Veryan, which creates medical devices for vascular intervention such as stents. Two of these projects will be focused on arterial intervention and the other will be working on a new treatment for venous disease.

The company is recruiting now for roles in regulatory affairs, design assurance and R&D.

Veryan Medical was acquired by Japanese company Otsuka Medical Devices, a subsidiary of Otsuka Holdings, in 2018. The company first arrived in Galway in 2006 and, since the acquisition, its team there has grown from 11 to 46 employees working across engineering, development, quality assurance, clinical operations, data management and more.

“For more than a decade, our Galway R&D team has nurtured a culture of design intelligence and this investment will create exciting opportunities to add this value mark to the new products we are developing,” said Nick Yeo, CEO of Veryan Medical.

To prepare for this expansion, Veryan recently relocated the Galway team to a new innovation centre at Parkmore Business and Technology Park, located close to the Galway-Dublin motorway. The 15,000 sq ft facility has been designed to the gold standard in LEED, an internationally recognised green building certification system.

“The investment announced today by Veryan is a significant addition to the Japanese life sciences companies that have chosen to locate in Ireland and further strengthens the west region’s medtech cluster,” said IDA Ireland CEO Martin Shanahan.

Noriko Tojo, president of Otsuka Medical Devices, expressed her gratitude to IDA Ireland for its support of Veryan’s R&D programme in Ireland, which she said is “central to our activities to deliver innovative and unique endovascular technologies to patients and physicians”.

Welcoming the announcement, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar, TD, added: “This expansion demonstrates the company’s commitment to Ireland and will allow it to continue to benefit from the rich pool of talent in Galway and the surrounding area.”
