29 Sep 2016

Wood Group, a company that services the oil and gas industry, has established a new data analytics centre of excellence at its Galway office.

With plans to hire 10 people at its new centre of excellence in Galway, Wood Group today (29 September) revealed plans for further expansion in the future.

Wood Group is aiming to increase its use of data analytics, subsequently feeding this into its oil and gas projects. It will use the new centre, situated at its current Galway site, to “enhance” its digital solutions capacities.

“Wood Group’s commitment is to providing innovative technical solutions that solve our client’s challenges,” said Bob MacDonald, Wood Group’s CEO.

“We recognise the power of data analytics to enable our energy industry clients to optimise their exploration and drilling activities, enhance efficiencies and maximise the productivity of their assets.

“This new centre, made possible through the support of the IDA, greatly enhances our specialist technical capabilities, enabling us to handle large quantities of data effectively and embrace and explore new innovations and technologies for the oil & gas, industrial, utility and power sectors.

“This broadening of our capability in data analytics, married with our strong expertise and heritage in engineering will create exciting new opportunities for efficiencies that will directly benefit our clients.”

Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs & Natural Resources, Seán Kyne, TD said the investment in Galway is a “positive sign” for the region, helping to make the west of Ireland a “global leader in this emerging sector.”

Elsewhere in Galway, Sahajanand Medical Technologies (SMT) –understood to be one of the largest developers of coronary stent systems in India – is establishing its European headquarters, creating 50 jobs over the next five years.

The investment will include a state-of-the-art research, development and innovation centre.

Meanwhile, global medtech player Becton Dickinson and Company (BD) is to create 20 new jobs in Drogheda in a €36m investment to expand production of its syringe products.

BD produces PosiFlush syringes and safety components for insulin injection at its Drogheda facility.
