The Medication Checker app
The Irish Sports Council has released its anti-doping app for Android smartphones, letting athletes check if their medications are compliant with anti-doping regulations.
The Medication Checker app can check if prescription and over-the-counter medications purchased in the Republic of Ireland comply with anti-doping rules.
It accesses information on the Drugs in Sport Database on Eirpharm and can search based on name or ailment type. Users can email a search result, save the search and recheck medications in the saved search history against current database listings.
The app was previously released for iPhones and since May, it has seen more than 1,200 downloads, with users checking between 10 and 20 medications each time compared to two and three on the Eirpharm website.
“The launch of the Medication Checker App for iPhone proved very successful earlier in the year. Results saw a ten-fold increase in the number of medications that users check on the Eirpharm.com database through the app,” said Ailish Keaveney, head of education and research with the Irish Sports Council.
“The ability for users to quickly check over-the-counter medications using a smartphone helps reduce the risk of inadvertently doping through the use of day-to-day medications.
“Making the app available for the Android Market will allow even more athletes, coaches and doctors to access the database and help protect athletes from inadvertently using prohibited medications,” she said.
The Android version of the Medication Checker app is available on the Android Market.
