Want to know what 100,000 stars look like? Following the successful JAM with Chrome app for dispersed bands and budding musicians, Google’s Chrome team has introduced 100,000 Stars, a visualisation of our Milky Way.
The stunningly beautiful 100,000 Stars Chrome app, which has a pretty little soundtrack by Sam Hulick running in the background, is eerily similar in structure to Google Earth in some ways.
And like the infectious JAM with Chrome app last week, it shows the beauty and versatility of what’s possible within today’s browsers.
It shows the real location of more than 100,000 nearby stars.
“Zooming in reveals 87 individually identified stars and our solar system,” the app’s notes explain.
Users pan using their mouse wheel or touch pad and can click on a star’s name to know more about it.
The galaxy images are an artist’s rendition of the Milky Way and are based on images provided by a variety of sources, ranging from Wikipedia to NASA, the European Space Agency, star data from the HYG Database, the Bright Star Catalog, the Department of Astronomy at Yale and many more.
