A final-year business information systems student at UCC has developed a smartphone app called Graduate Jobs Ireland aimed at keeping graduates and undergraduates up to date on the latest student career events, jobs and news.
Student Kieran Maloney has just placed the Android version of the free app on the Google Play store and told Siliconrepublic.com that he plans to have an iOS version on the Apple App Store by 20 February.
“I thought that an application like this would be a good opportunity for companies to make students aware of the internships, graduate schemes and other opportunities they offer on their own dedicated page in the ‘Companies’ directory page of the application,” Maloney explained.
“I also thought that this company directory would give smaller Irish firms that offer undergraduate and/or graduate opportunities a better representation as these firms are often over-shadowed by large multinational firms when it comes to recruiting graduates,” he added.
Maloney only started developing the app in the last three months. The main tools used in development were Eclipse, Notepad++, Dreamweaver and Themeroller. The main technologies used to build to app were Java, JQuery Mobile, Phonegap and PHP.
“I think the app has a lot of scope and is not confined to just the Irish marketplace. In the coming months, I have the intention of releasing the application in other countries where there is a large demographic of undergraduates and graduates of third-level education and also where smartphone usage is high,” Maloney said.
