File-sharing service Rapidshare has announced it will shut down on 31 March after 13 years.
As reported by Ars Technica, the website abruptly revealed the news yesterday (11 February), posting a message to users on its homepage. All customer accounts will no longer be accessible after March and will be deleted automatically.
“Thank you for many years of trust,” read the short note signed by the Rapidshare team.
Despite attempts to combat internet piracy, Rapidshare became synonymous with illegal MP3 sharing, with users often posting albums and other copyrighted media on the site which could be downloaded by anyone.
In 2010, the Switzerland-based firm was named one of six websites that most enable copyright infringement by US Congress.
