4th of July: America’s Independence Day in numbers

4 Jul 2015

The 4th of July is upon and we all know what that means for our US friends — fireworks, barbecues and much waving of the American flag.

Holidays are also big business in the US and statistics company Statista has compiled a frankly jaw-dropping chart showing just how much Americans spend — and consume — on Independence Day.

Its figures show that nearly two-thirds of people plan to attend a barbecue or picnic, and that Americans will eat 700m pounds of chicken and 150m hotdogs on the day — and that’s just two of the foodstuffs they’ll be consuming.

The figures also show that, in 2014, nearly US$700m was spent on fireworks.
