Snapchat starts offering even more bizarre selfie lenses for cash

16 Nov 2015

Snapchat has found a new way to bring in revenues with its decision to offer in-app purchases of additional selfie lenses, to make you look more ridiculous than ever.

Launched last September, the Snapchat selfie lenses are limited to seven at the bottom of the user’s screen, which change daily, but are mostly seen with rainbow vomiting and being able to give yourself bug eyes.

If you haven’t seen them, the lenses are activated by pressing and holding down on the image of your face in the selfie camera, which can then be toyed with to your heart’s content, allowing you to make a face, without actually making a face. This makes it pretty good for people who use Snapchat on public transport, but want to play it cool by not pulling stupid faces.

Despite their weirdness, they have seemingly proven popular with users and now the messaging service wants to turn that traction into money by offering the option of paying $0.99 for additional lenses.

According to TechCrunch, there will be 30 additional lenses available each day, along with the seven free options, and it will cost $0.99 per use.

But if you don’t want to pay up, you can still preview them for free

With that someone will be able to see that snap twice, but it will then cost the viewer $0.99 to see it again.

The company understandably plans to turn the additional selfie lenses into a way of including marketing with it through sponsored lenses.

This will also coincide with the messaging app finally getting around to rolling out official accounts for celebrities, while figuring out how to make it easier for people to find their favourite celebrity’s accounts.
