Facebook has come a long way since its origins in a Harvard University dorm room in 2004.

As it celebrates its 12th birthday today (4 February), Facebook can boast that it has more than 1.5bn monthly active users, with more than 1bn people logging on to the social networking site every day.

As Facebook turns 12, the website, which was originally only accessible for Harvard students and alumni, can now boast that more than 80pc of its users are outside North America.

Facebook now employs just shy of 13,000 people, including 1,000 at its EMEA headquarters in Dublin, and it is also planning to build a state-of-the-art data centre in Clonee, Co Meath.

Facebook, which reported impressive Q4 2015 results last week, also has in its ecosystem messaging service WhatsApp, which recently hit the 1bn user mark, Instagram (400m users) and Messenger (800m).

So, happy birthday Facebook, we’re sure it’s gonna be another good year. To celebrate, here’s a nifty infographic, produced by the guys at One Productions.
