Allianz launches severe weather warning app

18 Jul 2011

Insurance provider Allianz has launched WeatherSafe, a new web and mobile phone-based weather application that will not only deliver accurate, up-to-date weather information, but also give critical information on protecting property against the effects of severe weather.

Developed by Allianz in Ireland and Allianz SE and powered by the MeteoGroup, WeatherSafe will deliver forecasts for any of 2.3m locations worldwide.

Allianz customers can set WeatherSafe to receive severe weather alerts for up to three locations anywhere in Ireland or Europe.

These alerts will be directed straight to their mobile phones or email addresses and will be accompanied by useful advice on protecting their family, pets and properties against the effects of severe weather.

WeatherSafe is free to all but only Allianz customers can avail of the added functionality by entering their insurance policy number on a dedicated WeatherSafe microsite.

Once logged on, customers then receive an activation code that will unlock further functionality, ranging from specific location alerting, weather risk prevention advice and satellite imaging and rainfall charts.

Severe weather has cost €765m in insurance claims

According to the Irish Insurance Federation, severe weather conditions since 2009 have cost more than €765m in insurance claims, twice the total cost of all weather-related claims in the last 10 years. WeatherSafe is designed to enable people to accurately monitor their most important locations and where necessary, based on severe weather alerts, take action to help minimise possible property damage.

“Given the recent extreme weather conditions that have affected Ireland, WeatherSafe will not only deliver accurate up-to-date weather information, but also give critical information on protecting property against the effects of severe weather,” said Brendan Murphy, CEO, Allianz.

“Allianz customers can avail of enhanced functionality, backed up by one of the most accurate weather forecasting services in Europe.”

The app is now available on Apple’s App Store. Other smartphone users can also access the WeatherSafe services online by going to here or here.
