RTÉ Radio 1’s Documentary on One website has clocked up almost 2.5m podcast downloads of its documentaries in two years.

More than 20,000 people have downloaded its iPhone and Android apps, which have been available since February 2010.

Celebrating the site’s second anniversary, RTÉ said there has been a 1,500pc increase in traffic since the new site replaced its previous incarnation.

The broadcaster also said the site is the largest online archive of radio documentaries in the world. It hosts 715 radio documentaries which date from 1954 to the present day.

“We are extremely proud of the Documentary on One website and apps,” said Lorelei Harris, RTÉ Radio’s editor of features, arts and drama.

“Everyone loves a good story well told and the ability to pluck a story off the digital platform with the same ease that you’d pluck a book off a shelf is what makes this work.

“It is the way of the future and, once again, the Documentary on One team are trailblazers both nationally and internationally,” said Harris.
