Android 2.4 set for summer 2011 release?

11 Jan 2011

Google’s next version of Android, Android 2.4 (Ice Cream), is rumoured to be getting a summer 2011 release.

According to Pocket-lint, sources have said Android 2.4 will be released around June or July, in time for its announcement at Google’s IO conference at the start of May.

The six-month gap for the update of Android would coincide with Google’s timeline for the mobile OS, saying it would focus on two major upgrades a year.

Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) has been rolling out across smartphones since December. Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) was recently shown off at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, though it may not count in Google’s Android timeline as many experts believe it will be a tablet-only operating system.

With Gingerbread only recently released, it will be interesting to see what else Google will have on offer for Ice Cream.
