Watch out Samsung Galaxy Tab and Dell Streak, having already reset the tablet computing world Apple is intent on heading off impending competition and is understood to be preparing a 7-inch iPad.

According to Engadget Apple has been at work on a number of new formats, with rumours ranging from large to small versions of the ‘magical’ iPad.

A 7-inch version would bring the device into direct competition with new devices due to launch from Dell and Samsung.

These rumours have been gaining ground in recent days with Taiwan newspaper Economic Daily News claiming the new device will be using the Cortex A9 processor core, 512MB of RAM just like in the iPhone 4 and a 1.024 x 768 pixel IPS panel.

The IPS panels because of the smaller format 7-inch device, will boost resolution as the device will enjoy a greater pixel density.

According to the rumour mill, these IPS panels will be provided by Taiwanese manufacturer Chi Mei and Korean manufacturer LG.

The device’s digitiser is expected to be provided by AUO and Sintek while Foxconn along with other contract manufacturers Compal and Pegraton will be assembling the new form factor iPad.
