Charity proves profitable for Irish entrepreneur

An Irish company specialising in making it easier for people to donate to charity has helped raise €420,000 in its first two years of operation.

Mycharity.ie has been up and running since April 2006. The brainchild of Niall Devine, the site hosts details of all charity events taking place throughout the year and anyone can log on and search for event they would like to partake in or sponsor.

Some 162 charities are currently registered with the site, and 30,000 individuals have sponsored a friend through the portal, which incorporates a credit-card payment option for donations.

Devine speculates that projected annual growth for 2008 for the website will be €1.7m, compared to €1m last year, a growth of 70pc.

“Mycharity.ie makes life easier for both the fundraiser and the donor. It’s a formula that is proving very popular – we have over 35,000 hits a month and charities that we deal with have expressed immense satisfaction with the service,” commented Devine.

“I hope to grow the numbers of charities that we accommodate and increase their income exponentially. This isn’t beyond the realms of possibility. The site grew from an idea borne out of my own charity fundraising and it has ignited something in the public.”
