Couple names their baby Hashtag – reports

28 Nov 2012

An apparently Twitter-loving couple have taken to Facebook to announce they have named their brand new daughter Hashtag, various media have reported.

Hashtags are used to highlight keywords on microblogging site Twitter.

A Facebook post on what is reportedly the mother’s Facebook page reads, “Hashtag Jameson was born at 10 oclock last night. She weys 8pounds and I luv her so much!!!!!!” 9News reported.

Hashtag isn’t the only baby to sport a social media-inspired name.

Early last year, a man in Egypt named his daughter Facebook, in honour of the country’s revolution. Many had used Facebook to organise protests as part of a larger effort to overthrow leader Hosni Mubarak.

Back in 2005 in Sweden, parents named their baby boy Oliver Google Kai. The dad reportedly said at the time he works as an account manager for a search engine optimisation company and is a PhD candidate in search marketing.

Some social media users, however, have speculated whether this recent birth announcement might just be a viral marketing campaign for a certain Irish whiskey – #Jameson.

The baby has already sparked the creation of two Facebook pages – Justice for Hashtag Jameson (‘This poor child deserves a name’) and simply Hashtag Jameson.
