Facebook launches ‘Places Deals’ in Europe

31 Jan 2011

Facebook users in certain European countries can now take advantage of discounts in shops and eateries by checking into the establishments using their mobile phones, now that the social networking site has launched Places Deals.

The initial roll out includes partners in France, Germany, Italy and Spain; in the UK, Facebook is working with Starbucks, Argos, Alton Towers, YO! Sushi and even R&B star Usher.

Users will be able to check into shops, cafes and restaurants with their mobile phones, using Facebook’s apps for mobile together with the touch.facebook.com site.

Other companies on board Places Deals are Debenhams, O2 and Mazda.

The service, which launched in the US in November, lets retailers see when someone checks into their shop or restaurant, and potentially offer them a discount code.

With the service, Facebook users also will be able see what offers are nearest to them at any time and share them with their friends.
