First hints at what the new Windows 8 will look like

4 Apr 2011

Microsoft has offered a tantalising glimpse of what the new Windows 8 operating system will look like. First impressions: it sort of looks like Windows Phone 7 with a dollop of Xbox and Office thrown in for good measure.

It seems Microsoft has taken its learning from the success of Xbox, Office and, of course, the latest Windows Phone OS and seems intent on something that is visually arresting yet simple to use.

The new OS appears to be optimised for a PC/tablet world and visually is reminiscent of the home screen on Windows Phone 7 devices.

Leaked builds suggests users will be able to log on using a pattern rather than a password, for example, as well as new forms of music control even when the machine is locked.

It has also been suggested that Windows 8 will come with an Office-style ribbon.
