Google launches Flipboard rival Currents internationally

12 Apr 2012

Google Currents, which lets users read online publications through a magazine-based format on iOS and Android devices, has been made available internationally after an initial launch in the US.

The Google Currents app first launched in December in the US and offers almost 400 publisher editions and more than 14,000 self-produced editions through the app. Publications include The Atlantic, Slate and CNET.

Users can choose from a list of publishers or add their own RSS, video and photo readers, as well as Google+ streams and Google Reader subscriptions.

For its international launch it has gained new features, including Google Translate integration. This lets users translate an article into one of 38 languages.

It also has a new dynamic sync feature which delivers new content using a minimum of the phone or tablet’s battery, bandwidth and storage. Users can choose publications packaged for offline reading.

Google Currents is available now internationally for iOS and Android devices. International publishers can now add their own local content to the service and can enable auto-translation on their publications.
