Google+ rolls out vanity URLs for brands and people

14 Aug 2012

Google has revealed that its Google+ social network has created a new service that lets brands and individuals create custom URLs. Under the new service brands like Toyota can now use google.com/+Toyota as a focal point of its online presence.

Writing on Google+, product manager Saurabh Sharma said the new custom URLs could be used by clothing brands, celebrities or everyday people to make sure they can be easily found online.

Sharma said the custom URLs will be available to people and pages worldwide.

“At first, we’re introducing custom URLs to a limited number of verified profiles and pages,” Sharma said.

“But over time we plan to offer custom URLs to many more brands and individuals, so please stay tuned.”

Current ‘verified’ names include Toyota, actor Hugh Jackman, pop star Britney Spears, footballer David Beckham, fashion brand Hugo Boss, games firm Ubisoft and its title Assassin’s Creed, Delta Airlines and Globo.

No doubt internet users and social media mavens will be keen to know when they can get their own vanity URLs and from some of the noises being made already in response to Sharma’s post, many are keen to avoid the usual pecking order.
