Photo-sharing app Instagram now has 50m users, according to reports, with 5m new users joining each week.

Mashable reports that Instagram’s API revealed the new landmark. It represents fast growth for the app, which hit 40m users on 13 April and 30m at the beginning of April. The app had 15m users at the beginning of 2012.

April was a particularly eventful month for Instagram. It released an Android app after spending two years as an iPhone exclusive. It was then acquired by Facebook for US$1bn.

Its Facebook acquisition gathered a lot of media attention, which could be driving this growth, as well as its move to new platforms.

Two days ago, it was revealed that the Instagram Android app was downloaded 10m times, suggesting that about 40m of its users own iPhones.
