Instagram has reached the No 1 spot in the iTunes free apps chart for the first time. The photo-sharing app gained major attention this week after Facebook acquired the company for US$1bn.

Instagram uploaded a photo of the charts onto its own photo-sharing service, saying it reached the top spot for the first time.

It overtook mobile game Kick the Boss, which was the second most-downloaded free app, and Draw Something, which was the third most-downloaded free app on iTunes.

Instagram gained global attention this week after Facebook announced it acquired the company for US$1bn.

The app lets users apply filters to their photos and share them with friends. It was initially released on iOS devices in 2010 before launching on the Android platform earlier this month.

Just before the acquisition, Instagram reportedly closed a US$50m funding round valuing it at US$500m. The company has just 13 staff members.
